About

The motif for these paintings are based on my childhood memories of the landscape in upstate New York. - the rolling mountains, open sky, grassy fields and dark woods. As a child I would wander the fields and woods at all hours of the day and into the evening. It was akin to having a spiritual experience though I didn’t realize it at the time. I saw colors and shapes that were in part imaginary or a trick of the eye but it always made me wonder is there something beyond that I couldn’t see.

Once the surface have been divided using tape I approach the painting as if the mask did not exist, completely forgetting it’s role. The very last step before the painting is finished is to remove the tape. The final result surprises me as if I had never seen the piece. The view of it has been altered by the gaps between the bars.
